Due to the popularity and success of Stress Management I, the Alverton Manor played host to the second in a series of seminars on Stress Management as part of the 2008 Worldwide Financial Planning Business Seminar Series.

Leading health psychologist, John Perry, returned once more to Cornwall to present to over 60 delegates on stress and how to avoid and reduce this within our personal lives and within the organisation.

The seminar was in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, delegates donated money to attend the seminar and we managed to raise £1330 for the charity,

Over 50 Cornish businesses attended the latest in the Worldwide Financial Planning Business Seminar series.

Taking place at the Alverton Manor Hotel, Truro, the event focused on what might happen to the UK market in 2008.

With worries about a slow down in the economy due to housing, interest rates, inflation and the sub-prime problems, the seminar looked at ways in which Cornish businesses could take advantage of opportunities.

Guest speaker Julian Chillingworth, a regular contributor on BBC Radio 4 and chief investment officer at nationally recognised Rathbone Unit Trust Management Ltd, gave an overview of the current market, as well as ideas for potential growth.

And Worldwide’s head of commercial finance, Jeff Lenihan, offered advice on how to cut costs and continue to grow business.

Dave Beaumont, senior manager commercial at Lloyds TSB said: “It was an excellent event and very thought provoking.

“It made you think about how the bigger picture has an effect here in Cornwall, especially with what has happened in America and the sub prime market.”

Julie Hutchison, who was appointed as Standard Life’s first ever national development specialist for estate planning, lead a seminar on Inheritance Tax and the recent changes in trust laws.

The slides from the Time Management session can be downloaded here. The download includes an Importance vs. Urgent Matrix to help categorise your priorities and a Daily Time Log sheet to identify exactly what you spend your time on each day!

Each delegate donated to Macmillan Cancer Support to attend - with their donations we managed to raise over £1000 for the charity.

Held at Alverton Manor in Truro, we invited stress management expert and leading health psychologist, John Perry, to share his tools and techniques.

As well as the presentation from Mr Perry, Worldwide also invited sports massage therapist Leah Wheeler to give tips on how stretching, massage and exercise can help fight stress.

Delegates found out how they could help themselves and employees to combat stress, which costs the UK economy an estimated £5 billion per year.

“I think a lot of it was common sense and most people in the room seemed to know what they should be doing, but having someone else explain the reasons why things happen and how to deal with the matter seemed to have much more impact.

“I’ve certainly learnt some very useful techniques, which as an employer, will allow me to make our working environment as stress free as possible.

“Simple things like drinking plenty of water, taking regular breaks which helps to increase productivity, and from a personal point of view taking regular exercise.

“But there were also other interesting facts about how people have different views of the world which can affect what they find stressful.” (Barry Wilkinson, director of stationers Office SMART)
