With less than three weeks to go a team from Falmouth School is leading the way in a virtual stocks and shares competition.

Six year 13 students in the Falmouth Maths team are competing with 19 other teams from schools across Cornwall in the Virtual Trading Challenge.

Organised by Worldwide Financial Planning and Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership and launched in September last year each team was given a virtual £100,000 to invest in the stock market.

With the competition due to close on March 19, Falmouth Maths are in the lead having made a 41.78 percent return.

“The return that Falmouth Maths has made to date is incredible,” said Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan.

“They are over £15,000 ahead of their nearest rival Callington A, and over £25,000 in front of their fellow pupils, Falmouth Business, who sit in fourth place.

“The last three weeks is always exciting though. Last year’s winners Bodmin were down in fifth place this time last year, but their shares had a real spurt and they rocketed to top spot in last couple of days.

“Anything can happen.”

If Falmouth Maths do hold on to win each team member will receive £50, while the whole team will be flown to London with Air South West for a trip around the Bank of England.

They will also enjoy a day on the water on Worldwide’s RIB.

Chris Rowe, independent financial adviser at Worldwide, said:

“Each year the standard of the competition gets stronger and stronger.

“When you consider what the market has been like over the last couple of years then Falmouth’s performance is good by any standard.

“One of their shares alone has more than doubled in value from a purchase of £42,813 to a current value of £92,884!”
