Cornish shoppers are been warned against getting wrapped up in debt this Christmas.

Spending on plastic is expected to exceed £20 billion in December and an award-winning independent financial adviser believes people should take care.

Peter McGahan, managing director of Truro and Wadebridge based Worldwide Financial Planning said: “Christmas can be a fantastic time of the year, but it can also be one of the worst, especially if you’re in debt.

“I don’t want to sound like Scrooge, but the fact that £20 billion will be spent on credit and debit cards in effectively less than a month is quite incredible.

“A lot of people putting Christmas shopping on credit cards will be thinking that they can forget about paying for a month, but when the statement comes through in January it can be a shock.”

In a bid to help people combat getting in to debt Mr McGahan has issued a list of five tips.

“Firstly, I would set a budget of what you know you can afford to spend on presents and food and stick to it.

“Christmas is about family and friends and how necessary is it to blow the budget just for one day?

“Secondly, where possible use cash or a debit card. Keep a note of how much you have and then use it for the things you really need.

“Will you really drink that bottle of advocaat or eat those jelly sweets?

“Thirdly, remember the everyday bills. Water, electric, gas and council tax still have to be paid and these should be a priority, because the consequences of not paying these can be high.

“Fourthly, if you’re sure that you’re going to spend on a credit card, shop around to see if you can get a better deal.

“And finally, although it may be tempting to say yes to store cards, the interest rates on these can be horrendous.

“Think about how much you need it and read the small print first.”

Not content with picking up awards for financial planning a Cornish business has also proved it’s a winner on the pitch.

Truro and Wadebridge based Worldwide Financial Planning has just completed its first football double by winning the Professional Services five-a-side league and cup.

The team lead by managing director, Peter McGahan, recently beat Coodes 6 – 2 in the final to complete a winning season.

“We were so pleased to win the double,” said Peter.

“Having won the league by eight points over our nearest rivals, HSBC, was an achievement, as they always seem to beat us or finish above us.

“So to do that and add the cup was great.”

En route to the final Worldwide beat Nalders 6 – 1 in the semi.

“I think the idea of having a professional services league in Cornwall is brilliant. Many of our friends from other companies take part, I know my guys enjoy playing and it’s a great way to unwind after a hard day in the office,” said Peter.
