A concert held to raise funds for an adoption charity has been hailed a success by organisers after over £1000 was pledged.

The event, featuring Four Lanes Male Choir and Redruth Amateur Operatic Society Trust Youth Choir, was compared by Rebecca Wills from BBC Spotlight.

Organised by Mike and Julie Beard it was held at Truro Roman Catholic Church,

All proceeds from the evening will go to Families for Children, which offers support to children and adoptive families.

“We’re really pleased to have raised so much money for a worthwhile cause,” said Mike Beard Secretary of Four Lanes Male Choir.

“It was a great evening and we have had so much feedback from people who expressed how much they enjoyed the concert.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to Peter McGahan and Worldwide Financial Planning, whose sponsorship of the event meant that all proceeds can go to Families for Children.

“Peter helped us with the concert advertising, posters, church fee and raffle books.”

Families for Children is a Christian organisation concerned with the welfare of children, parents and families, and aims to uphold the importance of love, marriage and family life.

It believes that the best place for children to grow up is within their family of origin, but where this is not possible, it endeavours to find adoptive families for children who need them, as well as offering ongoing support.

“Those who saw the BBC programme where my wife searched for her birth parents will know how important this charity is to me,” said Peter McGahan.

“I’m pleased that the money that was raised will go to giving kids a chance to have a happy life.”

Known as a giant in the cricketing world Nick Yelland is now known as a giant to a Wadebridge business after they had to have a shirt specially made for him.

Worldwide Financial Planning, which is based in the Platt, sponsor Wadebridge Cricket Club and provide the team’s after match shirts.

But when it came to Nick the award winning financial advisors had to get the tailors in to ensure the right fit.

“We really enjoy supporting our local cricket team, by supplying the shirts for them to wear after the match,” said Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan.

“We had the usual requests of medium, large and a few extra large, but when it came to Nick we had to get the sowing kit out.”

Nick, who runs YB Builders in the town, measures up with an incredible 50 inch chest, 22 inch neck and 40 inch waist.

“The man is a giant,” said Peter.

“But despite his size he’s one of the nicest guys I’ve met.

“I’m just glad he’s on the team I support because I would hate to be bowling against him as he can whack the ball for miles!’

An award winning Cornish company has beaten off bids from other independent financial advisers to secure a tender with Cornwall County Council.

Truro and Wadebridge based, Worldwide Financial Planning, has recently won the right to provide educational seminars and one-to-one support for the Council’s 18,000 employees.

The free seminars, which will take place during lunchtimes, will help the staff to work out their own financial capability and allow them to assess if they need further help.

“We’re really excited about winning this tender,” said Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan.

“Organisations, both large and small, are beginning to take more responsibility towards their employees, and financial wellbeing is an important part of that.

“We will deliver a well structured series of seminars to help people gauge a better understanding of their finances and how they can ensure their money is working for them.”

The scheme is being promoted nationwide by the Public Sector People Management Association (PPMA) following a report by the Institute of Actuaries.

It was lead by Cornwall based businessman Sir John Banham, who believes employers should offer ‘wealth checks’ for their staff to encourage them to save, as well as plan for the future.

The report recommends that each employee should have a minimum of two hours advice a year and that the ‘wealth check’ should be written into employment contracts.

Sir John said: "It is now commonplace for employers to offer their staff access to services such as medical health checks as an employee benefit. Providing access to financial advice would operate in a very similar way."

Councillor Brian Higman said: “We were really impressed with Worldwide.

“They know the markets well, are very successful, know how to get their message across to help people and most importantly is that with their offices in Truro and Wadebridge we are sure that our staff will be able to gain ongoing, one-to-one support to ensure that they get the best out of their money.”

Businesses in Cornwall will now be able to tell people more efficiently how they helped raise £1500 for Macmillan Cancer Support thanks to an award winning company.

Worldwide Financial Planning, which is based in Truro and Wadebridge, recently held time management and communication sessions at the Alverton Manor hotel as part of its ongoing business seminar series.

And as well as benefiting the 75 delegates who attended the day, Worldwide was also able hand over a cheque to Macmillan.

“It was a great day, informative and interesting and I think everyone left having gained a lot from the sessions,” said Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan.

“After the success of the stress management event, we had John Perry lead the day again and he really got people thinking about how they manage their time and how they communicate.

“It was incredible to see the response from people when John said that to-do lists don’t work.

“But he was able to give people tips on how they can make their working days more effective and productive.”

During the day John looked at the emotional reasons behind why people find it hard to manage time, as well as communicate.

“The feedback we’ve had from people is that they will take on some to the tips learnt into their own business,” said Peter.

“So its great that we can help people that way, but I’m also happy that they wanted to come along and help us raise money for Macmillan.

“Handing over £1500 was great, especially as it is a charity close to my heart.”

“Sign up soon” is the message being issued to any businesses wishing to attend Worldwide Financial Planning’s forthcoming time management seminar.

Taking place at Alverton Manor, Truro, on Thursday 19 July, the two sessions – time management and communication - have attracted wide interest and now there are only limited spaces available.

In fact the day has proved so popular that it has already been moved to the hotel’s Great Hall to cope with demand.

Peter McGahan, managing director of Worldwide, said: “This is the next in our business seminar series and following the success of our recent seminar on stress, we thought it would be a good idea to hold these sessions with leading health psychologist John Perry to help local businesses.

“Companies will find out why to - do lists don’t work and unlike most time management courses this will go into detail on the emotional intelligence behind why time is actually wasted in the first place.

“Time management and communication affect everyone, so we believe these two sessions with be really beneficial and help people with the successful running of their business.

“These are obviously topics that are important to people as we’ve had over 60 delegates book so far.”

Starting at 9.30am with the time management section, and 2pm for the afternoon communication and coaching session, delegates can attend both parts of the day or just one.

“We are so pleased to have John as a speaker again as we had so much good feedback last time he was here,” said Mr McGahan.

“He is renowned for what he does and anyone who hears his seminars will learn so much from him.”

Tickets cost £25 for one person or £35 for two, with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support.
