A former apprentice of one of the world’s most renowned hair stylists is now cutting it in the world of finance after joining a firm of Cornish independent financial advisers.

Neil Bullen, who trained under Vidal Sassoon before running his own chain of hair salons, has recently joined Truro and Wadebridge based Worldwide Financial Planning.

He will work as a financial planner at the award-winning firm working with retired people and specialising in inheritance tax planning, portfolio management.

“When people find out that I trained under Vidal Sassoon and now work as an IFA they’re often surprised by the change in career,” said Neil, who is also a member of Truro Fencing Club.

“After working in the West End with Sassoon I set on a path in business and opened 10 hair salons across southern England.

“However, after the big recession in the early 90s which had a massive impact on the salons, I decided instead of being reliant on finance, I wanted to be at the heart of it and help other people.”

Neil then began his retraining and joined a large bank as a financial planner and mortgage adviser.

“I enjoyed the time at the bank, it gave me a good understanding of the markets, but I would see clients who I knew would be much better off with a service the bank was unable to offer.

“So I decided to become an IFA so I could offer them that option.

It was then after following a boyhood dream of living in Cornwall and moving to Tregony that Neil first came across Worldwide.

“I saw their adverts at Newquay Airport and saw Peter McGahan in the press, and that made them stand out for me,” said Neil.

“I respect their marketing and believe that we share the same values, which is to offer the best advice to our customers.

“I wanted to join Worldwide as they are one of the fittest firms of IFAs in the country.”

Peter McGahan, managing director of Worldwide said: “Neil was an ideal candidate for us because of his experience in real life and in business.

“He has a great understanding of what it means to need finance on a personal and business level, which will allow him to have empathy with our clients, but also help them towards successful outcomes.

“We’re pleased to have him on board.”

A Cornish businessman well known for offering advice on money matters has been signed up to write for one of the country’s leading financial publications.

Peter McGahan, managing director of award-winning independent financial advisers, Worldwide Financial Planning, has been asked to offer his opinions in a weekly column in the Financial Advisor.

The publication, which is produced by the Financial Times, will see Mr McGahan line up alongside some of the country’s leading commentators.

“I’m really proud to have been asked to write a column for the Financial Advisor,” said Mr McGahan, who also writes a column for the West Briton and Cornish Guardian.

“It’s a real privilege and it will be a great way to promote the business, as well as Cornwall.

“I’m proud to be based here and have such a successful company. It goes to show that there are great opportunities in the county and that we can offer the best services.”

With uncertainty in the mortgage market due to Northern Rock and ongoing issues to do with housing Mr McGahan already believes he has plenty to get his teeth into.

“There’s always something interesting going on in the world of finance,” said Mr McGahan.

“And everyone who knows me knows I like to offer an opinion so there’ll be plenty to keep me going!”
