A Cornish company is laying claim to being the most successful independent financial advisers in the country.

Over the last four years Worldwide Financial Planning, which has offices in Truro and Wadebridge, has picked up an incredible 17 awards.

The gongs, 16 of which have been handed out by the Financial Times at the annual Financial Adviser ceremony, have recognised the company’s skills across a range of financial sectors.

“Its incredible when you look at the achievement on paper,” said Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan, who also picked up Best Marketing Strategy at this year’s Cornwall Business Awards.

“I think for our 11,000 customers across the country who know us and our level of service, the awards are a nice pat on the back.

“But for potential customers they help create a level of trust and highlight our expertise.

“And for our staff its really good recognition of the hard work and level of service that they put in everyday to help our clients get the most out of their money.”

Despite having offices in Southampton and Northern Ireland, where Mr McGahan was born and bought up, he is really keen to highlight the fact that the vast majority of his company, which was only founded nine years ago, is based in Cornwall.

“People tend to have this view of Cornwall as being a great place to come for a holiday, and that’s about it.

“It is a great place to visit and to live, with the beaches and space, but it’s also a great place to do business. At present Cornwall is undergoing a real renaissance.

“There are some exciting businesses here, many driven by young, dynamic entrepreneurs, and the culture seems to have developed into one of opportunities.

“I guess if you go back a few years then there were less opportunities and young people had to leave in order to go to university or pursue a career, probably the similar reason I left Northern Ireland

“Now we have a university and young people want to come back, or stay in Cornwall, and forge a career.

“We have a lot of young graduates approaching us for work, who want a career with a successful company, but who also want to live in a beautiful location.

“I would like to think that we’ve played a part in the current development, and I think the awards would point to this.”

When asked about his thoughts on how his business would be different if it were based in London, Mr McGahan said: “I like London and going there on business, but would I live there? No way!

“What I hope that we can show by being successful is that you can be best and be based in Cornwall.”

And for the record the awards won by Worldwide over the last four years are: Business Finance Adviser of the Year 2007, Overall Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2007, Individual Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2007, Adverse Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2007, Business Finance Adviser of the Year 2006, Overall Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2006, Adverse Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2006, Individual Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2006, Investment Adviser of the Year 2005, Ethical Investment Adviser of the Year 2005, Overall Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2005, Adverse Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2005, Individual Mortgage Adviser of the Year 2005, Independent Financial Adviser of the Year 2004, Group Pensions Adviser of the Year 2004, and New Investment Adviser of the Year 2004.

Following the news that it has just appointed to provide financial support to Cornwall County Council’s 18,000 employees, a firm of Cornish independent financial advisers is celebrating again.

Truro and Wadebridge based Worldwide Financial Planning has been chosen by the Financial Standards Authority to lead a financial capability course for businesses and their staff in Cornwall.

The scheme will see Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan, along with Nick McBreen, Debbie Hale and Donna Hanson, run seminars around the county.

The FSA will approach all businesses for a review and offer Worldwide to the companies free of charge.

“In a time when welfare for employees is of paramount concern, the FSA believes that businesses should be playing a key role in helping their staff to ensure that their finances are in good shape,” said Peter.

“Many businesses put a great emphasis on health and general wellbeing, but finances are an important factor in this, and they can often get overlooked.

“When you consider that stress costs the economy around £6 billion per year, and financial issues are often at the heart of that, then we believe that this is a good move.

“The FSA will approach all businesses in Cornwall and offer them and their employees a series of seminars on how to make sure their finances are in good shape.”

The FSA, which will be running the scheme nationwide, chose Worldwide's key individuals due to the company’s continued success in getting the message across about finances after also assessing each of the individuals in Canary Wharf in London.

As well as picking up four awards at this year’s FT Awards, the Worldwide recently won the Marketing Strategy category in the Cornwall Business Awards.

“We are one of the most successful firm of IFAs in the country and we have a good relationship with the FSA, which is why I believe we have been chosen to deliver this important message,” said Peter, who is also one of 10 IFAs in the country to sit on the FSA’s advisory body.
