This year’s winners of a virtual £100,000 stock market school challenge enjoyed the high life as they jetted off to London for a visit to the Bank of England.
The team of year 12 pupils from Bodmin College boarded the Air Southwest flight from Newquay to London Gatwick after scooping first place in the competition.
The AS level students won the top prize after returning almost 40 percent to beat 17 other teams from schools across Cornwall in the second annual Worldwide Financial Planning and Education Business Partnership (EBP) Virtual Trading Challenge.
“It was a really good day and I would love to do it again. I really enjoyed the Bank of England talk and am looking forward to the boat trip.”
said Sam Mullin, 17, a member of the victorious Bodmin A team.
Jack Davey, 17, who is studying Business, English Language, and Geography, said: “It was a fantastic day, we saw so much and I’ll never forget it. It was fun flying up from Newquay and London City Airport, it made us feel like VIPs”
While Emma Pooley, 17, said: “It was a very good day. The Houses of Parliament and Bank of England were very interesting and it was a nice day out.”
After the visit to the Bank of England the team enjoyed the sites of the capital before returning on Air Southwest’s new service from London City Airport back to Newquay.
Back in Cornwall the team will now take to the water for the next part of their prize.
“As well as £60 each, the flight to London and the trip to the Bank of England we’ve also arranged for the guys to spend a high speed day on the Worldwide rib,” said Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan.
“They’ll get a chance to learn how to drive the rib with qualified instructors and have some fun off the Cornish coast.
“With a month to go in the competition Bodmin A were lagging behind, so for them to win was an amazing outcome and they definitely deserve their prize for the way in which they held their nerve and handled their investments.”
In an incredible finale Bodmin A, overturned a £12,000 deficit to pip last year’s champions, Pool Business and Enterprise College, and their college friends in Bodmin B.
Peter is now working with EBP to finalise details of the 2009/10 competition.
“All I’ll say is that there’s going to be a twist with this year’s competition, but people will have to wait and see what that is,” said Peter.
Mike Coombes, Deputy Chief Executive of Air Southwest said: “Air Southwest’s recently launched London City service has been particular popular with our business customers who are taking advantage of the new air links from Newquay and Plymouth to fly into the heart of the capital and enjoy a full working day in the city.
“The Virtual Trading Challenge is an excellent initiative and we were delighted to welcome the winners aboard to experience the speed and convenience of flying from their local airport to London and I hope that we see them again soon as our next generation of business customers.”
