An award winning Cornish company has beaten off bids from other independent financial advisers to secure a tender with Cornwall County Council.

Truro and Wadebridge based, Worldwide Financial Planning, has recently won the right to provide educational seminars and one-to-one support for the Council’s 18,000 employees.

The free seminars, which will take place during lunchtimes, will help the staff to work out their own financial capability and allow them to assess if they need further help.

“We’re really excited about winning this tender,” said Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan.

“Organisations, both large and small, are beginning to take more responsibility towards their employees, and financial wellbeing is an important part of that.

“We will deliver a well structured series of seminars to help people gauge a better understanding of their finances and how they can ensure their money is working for them.”

The scheme is being promoted nationwide by the Public Sector People Management Association (PPMA) following a report by the Institute of Actuaries.

It was lead by Cornwall based businessman Sir John Banham, who believes employers should offer ‘wealth checks’ for their staff to encourage them to save, as well as plan for the future.

The report recommends that each employee should have a minimum of two hours advice a year and that the ‘wealth check’ should be written into employment contracts.

Sir John said: “It is now commonplace for employers to offer their staff access to services such as medical health checks as an employee benefit. Providing access to financial advice would operate in a very similar way.”

Councillor Brian Higman said: “We were really impressed with Worldwide.

“They know the markets well, are very successful, know how to get their message across to help people and most importantly is that with their offices in Truro and Wadebridge we are sure that our staff will be able to gain ongoing, one-to-one support to ensure that they get the best out of their money.”
