A charity fundraiser from the Isle of Scilly has been recognised for her hard work at an awards ceremony which celebrated the unique character of the islands and the people who live and work there.
Angela Jenkins, who lives on St Mary’s and raises money for Cornwall Air Ambulance, picked up the Outstanding Contribution to the Isle of Scilly award at the first Isles of Scilly Business Awards.
She was joined by 11 other award-winners, as voted for by Radio Scilly listeners, at the gala event held at the Atlantic Hotel, St Mary’s.
Created by the world’s smallest broadcaster, Radio Scilly, together with the South West’s leading firm of independent financial advisers, Worldwide Financial Planning, the awards recognised local heroes who make a difference to the Scilly economy.
Angela, whose award was designed by the children of Five Islands School and created by glass designer, Oriel Hicks, was chosen ahead of her fellow winners by Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan, the company’s regional manager for Scilly, Matt Higham, and Visit Cornwall’s head of tourism, Malcolm Bell.
Matt Higham said: “All the winners were extremely worthy, do a huge amount for the local community and thoroughly deserved the recognition they got from their family, friends and neighbours.
“The has been a fantastic first year for the awards and has highlighted what heroes there are here.
“But myself and the fellow judges were so impressed by the work Angela does for charity and the islands that we felt that it was right the she won the extra award.”
Angela Jenkins, who has lived on Scilly all her life, said: “I’ve been collecting for the Air Care Lottery and Cornwall Air Ambulance for 20 years and it’s really pleasing to have won.
“It’s nice to think that you’re appreciated.”
During the last year Radio Scilly listeners nominated and voted for their weekly hero. At the end of the month the weekly winners completed for the monthly award.
