The first winners of an award scheme celebrating the unique character of the Isles of Scilly and the people who live and work there have been announced.
The Isles of Scilly Business Awards have been created by the world’s smallest broadcaster, Radio Scilly, together with the South West’s leading firm of independent financial advisers, Worldwide Financial Planning.
Running until autumn, islanders have been asked to nominate their local heroes who make a difference to the Scilly economy, with listeners then having the opportunity to vote for a winner.
Keri Jones, managing director at Radio Scilly, said: “We know that on our islands, nearly everyone plays an important role in the economy.
“We aim to recognise both managers and staff, owners and part time workers for the contribution they make to life in our vibrant community.”
Winners so far include Ann Puddifoot, who took the award for Best Secretary at Five Islands School; Russ Hutchins, who was given the Best Value Business award for The Galley restaurant; and Gaz O’Neill, who was credited with the award for the Best Window Display for The Deli.
Each month Radio Scilly will identify a theme. Islanders will be encouraged to nominate and then vote in weekly categories that relate to this theme.
Radio Scilly will announce the weekly category each Monday and once at least four nominations are made in each category, listeners will be able to vote for the most deserving nominee on the website, www.radioscilly.com.
Peter McGahan, managing director of the award’s sponsor, Worldwide, said: “Business success is often driven by the people who work there so these awards will recognise the vibrant businesses on the islands and the individuals that make them.
“With the unique community spirit on Scilly, everyone will know someone worthy of one of these awards. This is an excellent opportunity for people to pull together and nominate their friend, family member or colleague.”
Matt Higham, Worldwide’s regional manager for Scilly, said: “This has been a fantastic scheme to be involved with.
“The awards are a great way for people to be recognised for the contribution they make to island life.”
There will be regular voting updates on air and Radio Scilly have been reading out the emails and letters of support to highlight examples on how individuals can really make a difference.
At the end of the month, the four weekly winners will compete for the monthly award.
At the end of the year, the 12 monthly finalists will be invited to an awards night at The Atlantic Hotel in April 2010.
Peter added: “The amount of nominations so far has been staggering. It shows a real sense of community in that people want to support and recognise those who do things well.”
