An independent financial adviser (IFA) from Truro has been using technology to support a client on the southernmost inhabited island of the Outer Hebrides.
Andrew Stallard, who works for Truro and Wadebridge-based Worldwide Financial Planning, helped Peter Colledge with his annuity after the soon-to-be retired teacher read the company’s financial columns online.
Peter, who lives in the Isle of Barra, initially decided to start reading the articles from the company 851 miles away after being recommended them by a ‘more financially savvy friend’.
Peter said: “I have been reading Worldwide Financial Planning’s posts for a number of years, after the company was recommended to me by an island friend. He is considerably more savvy than me, so I joined up. And very glad I am that I did.
“In the last two years I determined that I would use the company for my annuity purchase.
“Week in, week out, their reports come in about all aspects of Government and industry initiatives and their likely impact on Joe Public. The reports are styled in an interesting way and reflect the fact that this company is based in the real world.
“I am about to retire, being of age, and I have been in a regular working relationship with Andrew. I have been in education all my working life, and recognise the efforts governors of schools make to ensure the success of their school. Andrew is one such governor. And I may not know much about finance, but I know honesty and integrity when I encounter it.”
Andrew who is a governor at Newquay Tretherras said: “It’s been really interesting getting to know Peter over the last two years and find out more about his life and his plans for retirement.
“It’s been great helping him get the best deal for his annuity and it feels like we have become good friends, even though we’ve never met.
“As a company we’ve been writing financial advice columns for the last 15 years and it is really nice to know that people do read and engage with them.”
Although there are no initial plans, Andrew hopes to take a trip to Barra and meet Peter in person.
