Less than a year after completing the New York Marathon two friends from North Cornwall have tackled 26.2 miles in another historic city.

Peter McGahan, who lives in Mawgan Porth and Stephane Delourme, who lives in St Issey, have both returned from Germany after taking part in the Berlin Marathon.

Finishing at the historic Brandenburg Gate, Peter who is managing director of Truro and Wadebridge based independent financial advisers Worldwide Financial Planning, finished in a time of 3 hours 54 minutes.

Coming in just behind was Stephane, who is head chef at Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, with a time of 4 hours and 28 seconds.

“New York was such a fantastic experience with over two and half million people lining the streets, but Berlin really held its own,” said Peter.

“It’s quite a different run and a lot flatter which should certainly have helped us achieve much faster times than last year.

“It was amazing to see the sites in a city that has so much history and to finish at the Brandenburg Gate was incredible.”

The duo were part of a group of eight business people who ran the New York Marathon in 2008 and raised over £20,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Stephane said: “I think the one aspect that surprised us the most was how hot it was on the day. 25 degrees was too hot for a marathon and put paid to any thoughts of a fast time.

“We had to keep well hydrated around the course, which I think helped our recovery as we both felt less aches than we did after New York.

“As well as running around a beautiful city one of my favourites things was being handed a bottle of German beer on crossing the finishing line. It went down very well!”

The pair are now planning their adventure and are considering tackling the marathons in seven Celtic nations including Cornwall, Wales, Brittany, Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man and Galicia in Northern Spain in 2010.

Peter said: “It will be tough but I think it is possible to complete all seven. It will certainly give us something to aim for and I’m hoping to get some other friends and colleagues involved.
