Schools from across Cornwall to find out which one can play the stock market the best.
The students who range from year 8 to 13 have been given a virtual £100,000 to trade on the stock market from October 12 until March next year.
Now in its third year, the Virtual Trading Challenge is organised by Truro and Wadebridge based independent financial advisers, Worldwide Financial Planning and Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership.
A new addition for this year will see Cornish businesses also taking place in a separate competition.
Peter McGahan, managing director of Worldwide, said: “We’re still in an interesting time in terms of the economy.
“Many people think we’re coming out of the recession, but there is still a bumpy road ahead for many companies, which can reflect in their share prices.
“How the teams factor this in when buying and selling their shares will be extremely important.
“The great thing about this competition is that it gets the pupils engaged with finance and really thinking about how important it is to manage their money.”
The challenge forms part of Worldwide’s commitment to the financial capability scheme established by the Government aimed at improving knowledge and understanding of personal finance.
Fellow Worldwide IFA, Chris Rowe, who will support Peter in the competition said: “We’ve had some fantastic results in the last two years with many of the pupils out performing some of the country’s leading investors.
“When you think we’ve been through one of the worst recessions in recent history then that is a fantastic achievement.
“I’m also really looking forward to seeing how the businesses fair against the schools.”
The winning school team will be treated with a visit to the Bank of England, a boat trip on Worldwide’s RIB and £50 each.
Kate Whetter of Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership said: “This is a fantastic, fun and interactive way for the students to learn about the world of finance and investment.
“It’s been a great success over the last two years with many twists and I’m sure this year will be no different.”
