Ethical and Green Research

We screen every green and ethical fund in many ways.

An example is below and we will use one of the more successful funds to highlight the research.

There are two parts to the screening: ‘Fund screening Notes’ and ‘Performance Notes’

Jupiter Ecology

‘Fund Screening Notes’

The Environmental Opportunities fund invests in UK stocks and adopts a ‘Best In Class’ approach to investing.

The Ecology fund invests globally but is more restrictive in its screening policies than its counterpart. It aims to promote those companies that contribute to sustainable development and provide solutions to environmental and social problems.

Jupiter Ethical Research Unit (JERU) is responsible for research into companies and actively engages to encourage the implementation of policies and procedures to contribute to sustainability. The stocks that the funds invest in are regularly reviewed for continuing investment.

JERU is keen to identify environmental trends at an early stage and seeks to invest in companies that are able to provide the systems or products to fulfil the need. Jupiter feel that this approach gives more scope for advancement in ethical issues than solely investing in those companies that already have a clean track record. There is a well-structured team process with information feeding in from both the ethical research team and the investment management side of Jupiter.

Investors have access to full details of the screening process and how these apply in relation to individual companies. As well as the usual performance related information, investors are supplied with articles on areas that JERU are actively involved in.

Avoids

Alcohol, animal testing, armaments, gambling, pornography, nuclear power, tobacco.

Supports

Public transport, pollution control, alternative energy, waste management, process control equipment, IT and telecommunications, environmental management systems, habitat conservation, education, healthcare, water quality, health & safety, human rights.

‘Performance Notes’

Risk is measured in Sharpe ratio, standard deviation and consistency as well as a measure being given by overall performance. This coupled with the overall notes and research above lead us to buying the best funds available for all the right reasons.

Jupiter Ecology

Consistency: Consistently 5th decile. It must be borne in mind that these funds are in a sector called global growth, which is hardly fair as a comparison given the restraints on investment. To be consistently 5th decile in this sector is a remarkable achievement.

Overall position in its sector as a green ethical fund is 1st place combining Sharpe ratio, consistency, standard deviation, and overall performance.
